Coming off a disappointing loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Detroit Lions are still sitting atop the NFC North but lack any sort of separation from the resurgent Packers, Bears, and even the Vikings.  Only a single win separates the top and the bottom of the division, so a divisional match up like the Lions have this week against the Minnesota Vikings becomes even more important.  Unlike their previous few games, most of the match ups against Minnesota are pretty straightforward.  With Calvin Johnson likely sitting, Reggie Bush uncertain, and the Lions offense struggling as much as their defense is dominating, there are few below the surface match ups to look out for.  (more…)

You’ve probably already seen the matchups you expected to.  Reggie Bush vs. the Vikings Linebackers.  Suh/Fairley vs. the Vikes Oline.  Hey, we’ve even got the annual smack talk between Jared Allen and whichever Lion is playing LT (Riley Reiff takes Jeff Backus’ old spot).  Those matchups are all good, and will surely be front and center during the Lions’ season opener.  Since you’ve already heard all of those, however, I’m going to point to a few matchups that we will also see in all its football glory, but maybe aren’t what you’d expect to be looking for.  Some of them I am surprised I haven’t seen mentioned more often, but all of them could have game changing implications not only for the outcome of this one game; but also for the outcome of the season if the team continues to win these battles.  They may be a little fringe, but they’re important nonetheless. The Vikings are still trying to recover from the depleted roster that the Brad Childress regime left behind.  They took a big step forward on the field last season, but are still in the roster and depth building phase.  It was always a given that Christian Ponder will get another year, so the objectives of GM Rick Spielman going into the draft were to give Ponder another target to help him reach the next level as well as continuing the youth movement on the defensive side of the ball.
