Lions/Browns: How the Defense Fared

Kent Lee Platte, DLD Writer

It doesn’t take a forensics investigation to discover that the Lions defense fared poorly against the offensive powerhouse of the Cleveland Browns.  The feelings of doom and gloom were not lost on the team, who immediately signed three players in the 24 hours after the game (They even signed one before the game, so THEY KNEW (Dun, dun, DUUUN)).  I wasn’t thrilled to be going back to watch the game from a defensive perspective, as the first time wasn’t very pleasant.   As is often the case, however, I was blessed with a different outlook the second go round that provided me with some distinct positives to go with the negatives (Which were even more negative).  (more…)

Lions/Browns notes

The second preseason game saw Detroit hop over Lake Erie to Cleveland. They travelled there in body anyways, but not in spirit. Detroit was lifeless, undisciplined, and maddening to watch in a 24-6 blowout loss. (more…)

Perception vs. Reality: How the Nation Sees the Lions

Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013

Houston fans perceive the Lions differently than most, and Glover Quin is a big part of the reason why

Jeff Risdon

I’ve spent most of the last two weeks relocating from my 3-year sojourn in Houston back to the Grand Rapids area. Along the way I’ve stopped in New Orleans, Nashville, Louisville, and Indianapolis after also spending a couple of recent weekends in Dallas. As I am almost always wearing a Lions hat, I am privy to a lot of unsolicited opinions about our beloved team. And there is a real discernible difference between how Lions fans see the team and how “outsiders” perceive both Detroit and the Lions. (more…)

Last week we covered the offense, this week it’s the defense. The difference here is that the team has now had one rookie camp to help shuffle things up a bit.

Twas the Night Before Christmas, Lions Style

Monday, December 24th, 2012

Twas the night before Christmas and all through Ford Field
Lions fans wonder what the offseason will wield
Another poor season is nearly complete
Our preseason dreams buried in defeat

Free agency looms for plenty of players
There could be changes at so many layers
Coordinators, assistants passing the torch
Several players pushed off the porch

Calvin Johnson sets records, dominating the sport
Now Martin Mayhew must get him support
No more malcontents or selfish druggies
Get us some playmakers, we’ll give you big huggies

The defense clinkers and clatters like a rattling trash can
Poor scheme, poor awareness, hard to be a fan
But Ndamukong Suh and his partner Nick Fairley
Can strike fear in opponents, more than just barely

Leshoure and Joique Bell offer some promise
I wish I could say the same about Mike Thomas
A return man and pass rusher are high on the list
And also a new safety that hits like a fist

Matt Stafford delivers presents all over the turf
But too often he throws like he’s trying to surf
Consistent mechanics, a more steady approach
Will make Stafford a QB few who can approach

Salary cap issues are coal in the stocking
But not enough to keep us from rocking
As Bob Seger would croon “There I go, turn the page”
A good draft, smart signings can reset the stage

Next season will be filled with lots of excitement and wonder
Will the Lions rise up or be again tossed asunder?
Honolulu Blue and Silver, for you we still cheer
In faint hope a playoff win will soon be near

We beg you, Dear Santa, for the arrow pointing up
Our loyalty deserves it, please come fill our cup
The pieces are in place to be really great
Oh Dear Santa please don’t make us wait!

Merry Christmas from!
