Will Today Be the Day?

The first day of free agency in Detroit was full of bluster but short on actual, factual news. Wednesday figures to be different. In fact, it’s already different: as I finished typing this up the news came across that Chris Houston re-signed. Terms are not yet available, but this was the top priority free agent move for the Lions. The team is much better with him than without him.

The free agency negotiation period kicked off at midnight Saturday, or 11PM Friday if you live in the Central time zone like me. The internet and sports radio were awash in a frenzy of rumormongering, postulating, and artificial intelligence. “Sources” used included the guy who takes out the trash at a team HQ; I know this for a fact because he happens to be an old friend and he advised me a certain four-letter network texted him trying to extract information. As if the custodian has some super-powered listening ability or is a Bond-esque silent witness to an illicit contract agreement, but I digress…

The Lions Not Playing Tag With Delmas

Monday was the deadline for NFL teams to use the franchise tag on their potential free agents. True to his word, Lions GM Martin Mayhew opted not to place the tag on anyone this year after using it on Cliff Avril a year ago.
