Dee Milliner tortured the Wolverines, but don’t expect him in Detroit (photo courtesy Toledo Blade)

This is the time of year where far too many people fall victim to the phenomenon of groupthink. A spurious idea about a team or a draft prospect catches fire and burns up mock drafts, internet message boards, and Twitter. Often it begins innocuously enough, with a simple projection by a popular pundit positing a player to a team because the need seems to fit the talent. Somehow this gets construed as some sort of Old Testament commandment from the NFL Draft Gods, of which Mike Mayock from the NFL Network is the reigning Zeus.

GM Martin Mayhew successfully brought the intensity this week
Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor
Wednesday shaped up as one of the most dramatic in Detroit Lions history. Martin Mayhew & Co. signed four players to just over $65M worth of total contracts, something that seemed unlikely at best and downright impossible less than a week ago because of salary cap issues.
If Wednesday doesn’t turn the opinion of the anti-Mayhew crowd, which remains way too Huge-ly irrational, those people are just hating on pure ignorant principle at this point. Mayhew has been an absolute magician in contract work, no doubt with help from President Tom Lewand and new assistant Brian Xanders.

Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor

A day after releasing malcontent wideout Titus Young, the Lions made two more moves with much broader significance on Tuesday. Two longtime starters, right guard Stephen Peterman and defensive end Kyle VandenBosch, were released by GM Martin Mayhew.
On the surface, these moves are all about saving money under the salary cap. The constraints forced on the Lions having to pay over $50M of the approximately $122M cap number to just three players (Stafford, Suh, Johnson) mean that pennies must be pinched. Young’s release did little to impact that bottom line, but the Tuesday moves are a significant step forward in cap reduction.
