Six Hidden Matchups for the Lions vs. the Buccaneers

Despite suffering an embarrassing loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Lions are still sitting atop the NFC North and in fact are still clinging to the 3rd seed in the NFC.  This week’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is important not only because the Lions need to bounce back and show they can win, but because it is an NFC opponent meaning the playoff implications are much bigger.

There are plenty of upfront matchups to look at, most notably the league’s best receiver going against its best cornerback, so there’s no need for me to hash those out here.  Another thing I’ll mention and then move on is how the Lions have to handle this game mentally, I don’t think we need to go into detail about how damaging a loss at this point in the season at home to a conference opponent can be.  So skipping over the obvious, we’ll jump right the under the radar match ups in this week’s make or break game! Lions Pull off the Amazing Win

The first half of the Lions home game against the Cowboys saw the Lions Offensive line bullying the Boys all over the field.  Calvin Johnson dominated Brandon Carr.  Dez Bryant was a non factor for almost the entire first half. The Lions Defensive Line was getting consistent pressure on Tony Romo.  The Lions DBs were getting into the backfield with regularity, blowing any chance for the Cowboys to get a run game going.  And yet, the Lions headed into the half down by 3 points after Matthew Stafford threw two back-breaking interceptions, one of which was returned for a  TD.  The second half was more of the same.

For close to 59 minutes, the Lions just couldn’t catch a break.  They would drive down the field and score, bringing the deficit to three only to break down in coverage and allow a long TD.  Then again.  Finally, with barely over a minute left in the game, Matthew Stafford got the ball with two time outs left.  Magic ensued.  (more…)

Six Hidden Matchups in the Lions Opener against Minnesota

You’ve probably already seen the matchups you expected to.  Reggie Bush vs. the Vikings Linebackers.  Suh/Fairley vs. the Vikes Oline.  Hey, we’ve even got the annual smack talk between Jared Allen and whichever Lion is playing LT (Riley Reiff takes Jeff Backus’ old spot).  Those matchups are all good, and will surely be front and center during the Lions’ season opener.  Since you’ve already heard all of those, however, I’m going to point to a few matchups that we will also see in all its football glory, but maybe aren’t what you’d expect to be looking for.  Some of them I am surprised I haven’t seen mentioned more often, but all of them could have game changing implications not only for the outcome of this one game; but also for the outcome of the season if the team continues to win these battles.  They may be a little fringe, but they’re important nonetheless. Of all the things we could take away from the Lions preseason drubbing of the Patriots, it’s that this rookie class could have a huge impact this season…for better or worse.  The Lions have been less apprehensive getting their rookies some work this preseason than what we’ve been accustomed to, and the returns are mostly positive so far.  Today we’re going to take a look at how the rookies fared in the team’s third preseason contest.
