Friday Draft Playbook

Will Terron Armstead run to the Lions on Friday?

Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor

With Thursday in the books, the attention turns to the second and third rounds. The Lions pick fourth in the second round and third in the third round, and both picks offer potential to select some very useful players.

Monday was the deadline for NFL teams to use the franchise tag on their potential free agents. True to his word, Lions GM Martin Mayhew opted not to place the tag on anyone this year after using it on Cliff Avril a year ago.

Detroit Lions Mock Draft 2.0

Get to know the man in this picture, David Bakhtiari

I’m going to lay out a couple of presumptions to help stage the picks. Luke Joeckel, Geno Smith, Sheldon Richardson, and Star Lotulelei (not necessarily in that order) will all be off the board by the time the Lions pick at five. I actually feel boldly confident in that statement despite it still being before the Combine. This scenario also is based on my guess, and it’s just a guess, that free agents Cliff Avril, DeAndre Levy, and Louis Delmas will be back but Chris Houston, Gosder Cherilus, and Justin Durant will not. That is just my idle speculation, and anyone who advises you that they know who will be back and who will not is simply guessing at this point as well; I talked to the agent of one of those players over the weekend and he advised me he has yet to talk to ANY team about his client beyond an assurance from one team (not the Lions) that they will talk about him while at the Combine.

This reflects my personal choices and does not intend to predict what decisions the Lions staff will actually make in April.

Post Super Bowl Mock Draft

Could the Lions spring for Ziggy Ansah?

Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor
We now know the draft order for the first each round as the Ravens wrapped up the coveted last spot. The compensatory picks that begin at the end of the third round will be announced later this month. I expanded to four rounds for this edition.

As always, the disclaimer: This is a scenario where I attempt to guess what the given teams would do with the given picks. It does not necessarily reflect the choices I would make in the same situations.

Ten Potential Lions from Senior Bowl Week

Saturday, January 26th, 2013

Robert Alford opened the Senior Bowl with a bang

Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor

The Lions first round pick at #5 overall was not in Mobile. Nobody (including the Lions) knows who that player will be at this point, but it’s safe to assume none of the talent in Senior Bowl week is worthy of that lofty a draft status. But their second and third round picks, and perhaps a couple of later picks, very well could come from the Senior Bowl rosters. Here are ten players that are definitely in play for those picks.

Senior Bowl Notebook: North Squad Day Three

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor

This was the final day of real intensity and I meant to spend more time watching the line play, but I was captivated by the offensive skill positions and defensive back seven talents on the North team.
