Mock Draft: One Month to Go! Edition

Eric Fisher as the Lions first round pick? I’ll take it!

Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor
Yes friends, we are down to just one month until the NFL Draft kicks off in New York City! I’ll be in Las Vegas for the event this year, which should give me a good gauge on the reaction from fan bases, as well as the opportunity to drink away frustrations at this being the year of the least accurate mock drafting by draftniks ever. If you can make it to Las Vegas, I’ll be happy to hang and we can catch the draft together. There will be plenty of surprises in this draft, and I took a stab at some of those here.

This edition goes out to five rounds and includes the comp picks through those rounds. I did not project trades in this one but be advised that many of the picks are more designed to match player with draft slot than team to player, particularly after the first 50 or so slots. I did less of that in this version than I typically do, for the faithful who have followed me for years now.

As always, this is an attempt to forecast what teams might do with the picks and does not necessarily represent the same choices I would make in the given situations.

Combine Watch: Defensive Backs

DJ Swearinger can be an imposing figure at safety

Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor

I know it will be hard for Lions fans to look past Dee Milliner’s 40-yard dash time, but there were some other DBs that performed in Indy who will merit attention from the Lions at various points in the draft. I’ll have a breakdown of the most viable candidates for the #5 tomorrow, and that list is a lot smaller than it was a week ago and it includes Mr. Milliner. He is the only DB on that list.

This summary omits a few players that will go before the Lions pick in the 2nd round(Jamar Taylor, Kenny Vaccaro, Xavier Rhodes, Desmond Trufant) and Tyrann Mathieu, who I am reliably told is not on the Lions draft board.

Ten Potential Lions from Senior Bowl Week

Robert Alford opened the Senior Bowl with a bang

Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor

The Lions first round pick at #5 overall was not in Mobile. Nobody (including the Lions) knows who that player will be at this point, but it’s safe to assume none of the talent in Senior Bowl week is worthy of that lofty a draft status. But their second and third round picks, and perhaps a couple of later picks, very well could come from the Senior Bowl rosters. Here are ten players that are definitely in play for those picks.

Senior Bowl Notebook: North Squad Day Two

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

Purdue DT Kawann Short had a lot to celebrate on Tuesday

Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor
After focusing yesterday on the offensive skill positions and DBs, today was more about linebackers, safeties, and the trenches. It was much colder today in Mobile.

The linebackers and safeties faced off against the tight ends and running backs in a mano a mano blitz drill. The defense clearly had the advantage throughout.

It was not Seth Doege’s best day of practice

Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor

Yesterday was DB and OL/DL heavy, so today I took a closer look at the offensive skill position players.

Shrine Game Notebook: West Squad Day One

Travis Howard had a good first day of practice

Jeff Risdon, DLD Editor

I spent the first part of practice watching the DBs in a couple of drills before moving to the OL vs. DL in a spirited pass rush drill. Most of the observations from the day will be from these position groups.
