February 12th, 2013

Lavar Edwards in action at the Senior Bowl

QB / RB / FB / WR / TE / OT / OG / OC / DT / DE / OLB / ILB / CB / SAF
Prospect: Lavar Edwards, DE, LSU
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 258 lbs
Grade: 6.56 (Grading Scale)

Scouting Report:

+Sturdy build with impressive strength for his size
-Plays with heavy feet and low foot repetition, beats defenders with upper body only
-Lacks range in open field or speed-oriented situations

-Overall motor and relentlessness needs to be higher for a pass rusher with average athletic ability
+Positionally versatile player who was played from all defensive line positions depending on situation
+Has a natural feel for gap leverage which shows up against both pass and run, uses a deliberate first step

Pass Rush:
+/-Effectiveness center on ability to land his hands in the proper place and get blockers moving backwards with power first
+Picks his way through traffic well by getting his hands into blockers quickly, bonus when rushing from the interior
+Shows technician-like qualities with his hands if able to generate initial push with the power rush
-Speed rush extremely limited by lack of burst with his first step and inflexibility of his hips
-Methodical pass rusher who is limited by lack of suddenness in his feet, rarely blows past slow-footed blockers if ever

Run Support:
+Stacks run blockers well at the line with necessary strength from lower half
-Gets to the ball at a low rate in the running game, not a high impact tackler
+/-Creates space with arm extension and hand placement but lacks consistent ability to shed blocks due to lack of footwork
-Limited burst to close on the ball when he does disengage from blockers
-Lacks necessary tenacity or overt physicality needed against the run, often too passive

+Shoots his heavy hands quickly to jolt offensive lineman, controls blockers with arms extended very well
+/-Far more effective player when his pad level is low, inconsistent on the whole due to lack of hip flexibility
-Struggles to stay balanced through contact occasionally, will lose his footing

Lavar Edwards has been stuck under the shadow of the more well-known pass rushers from LSU, Barkevious Mingo and Sam Montgomery. Edwards was essentially used as a rotational player for the two, but also was spotlighted as an interior rusher on obvious passing downs. He’s still a highly experienced player who contributed all four years for the Tigers. Edwards is simply nowhere near those other two pass rushers in terms of immediate effectiveness or long-term upside. His lack of impressive athleticism is a big limit for a pass rusher hoping to get drafting in the middle rounds. His saving grace is well-developed technique. After all, he was still quite productive throughout his career in the SEC. Edwards is a nice fit as a depth defensive end for 4-3 teams, who has some potential to kick inside on rushing downs and contribute from the inside. But overall, he’s a bit of an underwhelming pass rusher who appears to be a late-round pick.–Darren Page

Scouting Notes:

LSU vs. Ole Miss
• Blows up a blocker and makes a tackle on the kickoff team
• Drifts inside on a read option, completely abandoning the edge, quarterback gives it the back
• Slows plays a read option as the free man, closes on the back quickly after he sees the inside give
• Loses footing as he goes into a bullrush and is easily handled by the tackle
• Lines up at nose tackle on third and long, walks the center into the QB’s lap with nice bullrush, can’t disengage to pursue when he takes off
• Comes free with an up and under move against a slow-footed tackle, does well to wrap up the quarterback to finish the play
• Rotational player when Montgomery and Mingo come out, plays either side

LSU vs. South Carolina
• Stacks and sheds at the point of attack perfectly, picks of Connor Shaw on an option keep and brings him down for a TFL
• Stays assignment sound on an inside carry with the fake end around coming his way
• Similar play run on the next down, reads it even quicker and crashes inside to make the tackle as the unblocked defender
• Loops around on an inside stunt after starting from two point stance, plays off run blocker with ease and gets into the hole
• Rushes from a 3 technique on third and short, lacks long speed to cut off Connor Shaw as he takes off towards the sideline
• Gives strong punch to tight end on goal line play, struggles to disengage though, eventually does but is too high and can’t bring down Lattimore
• Drops from 3 technique position on zone blitz on 3rd and long, feet a bit slow, gets pinned by a blocker on a middle screen
