Predicting the Compensatory Picks in the 2013 NFL Draft

January 6th, 2013

What will the Lions receive for Eric Wright?

Will Richards, DLD Contributor

The NFL distributes 32 compensation picks every year. Rarely are there 32 picks distributed based on player transactions so to distribute the other remaining picks the worst teams in the league are given picks at the end of the draft to meet the quota.

Predicting the compensatory pick selections is far from an exact science. If anybody has ever gotten every one right I’ve never heard about it. A lot of data goes into predicting these. If you believe that I missed a player or shorted your team a pick I’d be happy to review, just leave a comment below and I’ll review the situation. Please note that players who received less than a million dollars aren’t factored into compensatory consideration very much at all.

Arizona
The Arizona Cardinals lost Richard Marshall and signed Adam Snyder but because of the difference in the contract signed, the Cardinals will receive a 7th round pick.
The Arizona Cardinals lost Duece Lutui who is canceled out by William Gay
The Arizona Cardinals will receive a 7th round pick due to their record

Atlanta
The Atlanta Falcons lost Curtis Lofton and will receive a 5th round pick
The Atlanta Falcons lost Eric Weems and will receive a 7th round pick

Baltimore
The Baltimore Ravens lost Ben Grubs and will receive a 4th round pick
The Baltimore Ravens lost Jarrett Johnson and will receive a 5th round pick
The Baltimore Ravens lost Corey Redding and will receive a 6th round pick
The Baltimore Ravens lost Tom Zbikowski, Haruki Nakamura, and Brandon McKinney.
They signed Corey Graham who cancels out Zbikowski and because a team can’t receive more than 4 compensatory picks, Nakamura and Graham combine to be another 6th round pick even though individually they weigh out as 7th rounders.

Buffalo
The Buffalo Bills lost Demetress Bell who is cancelled out by Mario Williams and Mark Anderson
The Buffalo Bills will receive a 7th round pick due to their record

Carolina
The Panthers lost Dan Connor and will receive a 6th round pick
The Panthers lost Travelle Wharton and will receive a 6th round pick
The Panthers lost Mackenzy Bernadeau who is canceled out by Mike Tolbert
The Panthers lost Geoff Schwartz who is canceled out by Haruki Nakamura

Chicago
Despite having 4 eligible players departing (Brandon Meriweather, Frank Omiyale, Caleb Hanie, and Corey Graham) and only three eligible players incoming (Eric Weems, Michael Bush, and Jason Campbell) the total dollar amount is greater incoming than it is outgoing causing so the Bears do not receive a pick.

Cincinnati
The Cincinnati Bengals lost Mike McGlynn and will receive a 7th round pick
The Cincinnati Bengals lost Nate Livings who is canceled out by Jason Allen
The Cincinnati Bengals lost Frostee Rucker who is canceled out by Travelle Wharton
The Cincinnati Bengals lost Jerome Simpson who is canceled out by Jamal Anderson
The Cincinnati Bengals lost Keith Rivers who is canceled out by BenJarvus Green-Ellis

Cleveland
The Cleveland Browns lost Mike Adams who is cancelled out by Juqua Parker
The Cleveland Browns lost Peyton Hillis who is cancelled out by Frostee Rucker
The Cleveland Browns will receive a 7th round pick due to their record

Dallas
The Dallas Cowboys lost Martellus Bennett and Laurent Robinson who are cancelled out by Brandon Carr, Kyle Orton, Lawrence Vickers, Dan Connor, Nate Livings, and Mackenzy Bernadeau.

Denver
The Denver Broncos lost Brodrick Bunkley, Daniel Fells, Brady Quinn, and Eddie Royal who are cancelled out by Joel Dreessen, Jacob Tamme, Tracy Porter, Justin Bannan, Caleb Hanie, and Mike Adams.

Detroit
The Detroit Lions lost Eric Wright and will receive a 4th round pick.
The Detroit Lions lost Drew Stanton who is canceled out by Jacob Lacey
The Detroit Lions will receive a 7th round pick due to their record

  1. Scott Mac says:

I believe Jacob Lacey had been released by the Colts , before the Lions signed him, I checked the Official Record and Fact book and he’s listed as , ” also played with Colts”, instead of “Players lost through Free Agency “. I hope I have my facts correct .

  2. Jon Hake says:

The Chiefs signed Kevin Boss after the Raiders released him so he doesn’t count towards comp picks.

    Orton cancels Quinn
    McClain cancels Hillis

The Chiefs are left receiving compensation for Carr. The last corner to sign a 5 year contract for over 50 Million was Asomugha and he returned a 3rd round compensation. I would expect at least a 4th but maybe even a 3rd.

    • Joe says:

The fact that another team cut a player has no bearing on whether the Cheifs get the compensatory pick. He is still counted as a “Gain” for the Cheifs, however he does not count as a “loss” for the team that cut him.

      • J.Boyle says:

In order to qualify for the comp equation, a player must have been a true Unrestricted Free Agent whose contract had expired or was voided after the previous season (i.e., he cannot have been released by his old team)

If a player is cut he does not qualify for the comp. equation for gain or loss…

        • S.Kelly says:

J.Boyle is right. Joe, if you were right, where is Eric Winston in the process? He is missing both in the “gain” column and the “loss” column. Boss signed 3/15/12. Winston signed 3/17/12.

  3. J.Boyle says:

Both Hutchinson and Wembley were cuts from their previous teams…
C.Finnegan and J.Jones will both be bringing in compensatory picks for the Tennessee Titans…

  4. J.Boyle says:

The maximum amount of picks 4 per team…

  5. J.Boyle says:

The Titans actually lost: Cortland Finnegan, Jason Jones, William Hayes,
Donnie Avery, Chris Hope, and Barrett Ruud….The Titans signed Leger
Douzable and Lamar Divens…(Wimbley and Hutchinson were cuts that
were signed and don’t count as far as compensatory picks)

  6. dave says:

under the ny giants, keith rivers doesn’t count as a free agent as he was traded to the giants for a 5th round pick, so they should receive at least 1 compensatory pick.

  7. J.Boyle says:

These predictions are not even close……

  8. allen says:

Green Bay LOST both Matt Flynn and Scott Wells. They signed Jeff Saturday to replace Wells.

  9. packfan says:

Your Packer information is totally wrong. Wells SIGNED with Rams for big contract. Packers always do well in comp picks.

  10. The Night Owl says:

“The Houston Texans signed Mike Brisiel and will receive a 6th round pick.
The Houston Texans signed Jason Allen and will receive a 6th round pick.
The Houston Texans signed Joel Dreessen and will receive a 6th round pick.”

The Texans lost those three, not signed them

  11. waynerd says:

The packers lost Scott Wells, they did not sign him. What should be the compensation for this loss?
